LOOKS CAN BE DECEPTIVE

The internet is littered with happiness surveys.

Here's one from Stacey Colino.

Answer yes or no to the following questions:

Do you ...

Yes

No

- generally expect things to go well in your life?

- have loving, supportive friendships and other relationships?

- feel as though your life has a sense of purpose?

- approach new situations with a can-do spirit?

- feel like you have some control over your life?

- feel fairly challenged in your work or personal interests?

- often get caught up in an activity because it's so enjoyable?

- practice some form of spirituality, religious or otherwise?

(I personally don't like the spirituality and religious question. It means too many things to too many people and I'm sure there are some people who don't have a spiritual, religious or superstitious bone in their body who are very happy. JM)

TOTAL

Now, add up your "yes" responses to see what your score means:

0-2

If happiness seems hard to come by, your attitude and outlook could be the holdup. Re-examine your beliefs on bliss to get back on track.

3-5

You're almost there - you have some of the traits that contribute to happiness, but you may not be putting them to maximum use.

6-8

Congratulations! Not only do you possess many qualities and attitudes that are connected with happiness, but - equally important - you know how to use them to enhance everyday joy.

What about money, beauty, fame and admiration? The truth is, studies show that your financial status, external circumstances and life events account for no more than 15 percent of your happiness quotient.

MY COMMENTARY

I don't particularly like yes/no answers. When it comes to feelings, 'yes' and 'no' don't pick up nuances. There are a few depression scales like this. I don't like them.

And I guess when it's all boiled down there is just one question to ask and that's 'Are you happy?', or:

'how do you feel today?'

Here's a survey I've put together to test the water. It's a 10 point graduated scale based on how you feel today. You can register how you feel anywhere on the scale between (and including) absolutely fantastic and dreadful.

Do the readers of the Health and Fitness Express feel better than, say the readers of Don Ardell's Wellness Report, or the staff at the George Institute for International Health?

As soon as we get enough results I'll report back.

CHAMPAGNE SPELLING!

How bad was that. Slap bang at the beginning of the second paragraph in my last newsletter was a spelling error. I spelt 'champagne' incorrectly. I'm grateful to one of Adelaide's leading word detectives for pointing out my error.

The spell checker thought I must have been writing about Champaign Illinois. I've been there. It's the home of Human Kinetics the world's largest publisher of physical education text books and where 'on the 4th of July, the corn is knee high!'

Now to pay for my sins I've got something very special for you. You may have seen it before. I've watched it maybe a dozen times and it keeps coming back.

(While you're there, don't even think of missing the clips of Andrew Johnston, Faryl Smith and Connie Talbot.)

You'll have to wait until next week for the 8 questions I promised in the last newsletter.

In the mean time stay tuned, highly tuned and remember, looks can be deceptive.

Regards
