GLYCONUTRIENTS

Every now and then I write to you about glyconutrients.

Glyconutrients are comprised of 8 essential plant sugars. In the usual course of events we are likely to receive a satisfactory intake of only 2 of them, glucose and galactose.

Until the mid 1990's carbohydrates were believed to only provide energy. It's since been found that they have a major role to play in intercellular communication. If the communication is compromised, the chance of dysfunction of some kind is enhanced.

The term "Glycobiology" (the study of Glyconutrients) was only coined in 1991. Since then a wealth of information has been unearthed and is revolutionising healthcare and the treatment of disease. It is a new and emerging area of nutritional science.

The glycoproteins are immune system modulators, i.e. if the immune system becomes over-stimulated (as in lupus) the glycoprotein has a modulating influence and assists in calming down an over-active immune system. If the immune system becomes under stimulate - colds, flu, cancer, then the process works in reverse, then the glycoproteins.

The list of effects that glycoproteins have on the body includes: -
- fighting auto-immune diseases
- strengthening the immune system
- lowering cholesterol
- normalizing blood sugar
- burning excess fat
- relieving allergies
- strengthening bones
- accelerating wound healing
- providing more energy
- improving athletic performance - for regular folks and athletes.

There are a range of conditions as long as your arm which have been found to improve when people include glycoproteins in their diet: -
- arthritis
- psoriasis
- diabetes
- ADHS
- chronic fatigue
- colds and flu

Based on the health assessments I give to people, I've formed the opinion that unless we're particularly diligent, we don't get the essential building blocks of nutrition out of our diets. If you're crook, your diet is a good place to look first. Your body is struggling because it's not getting the right nutrition.

For that reason I encourage people to supplement their diet with vitamins, essential fats (particularly (omega 3), minerals and glyconutrients.

I supplement my own diet because I have the firm belief that there is probably a good chance that I'm not getting everything I need to support body and life out of the foods that I eat. I take vitamins, omega 3 fats, glycoproteins and a few minerals - magnesium and chromium. In the past I have also taken glucosamine - that fixed up my sore heels - and saw palmetto to clear the water works. That works too.

I figured that if I ate the perfect diet, grown on the perfect soil under the perfect conditions there was still a likelihood that I'd be missing out on something that my body needed. So I did something about it and joined a couple of organisations to purchase supplements.

If you had the perfect diet you'd probably be able to get the glyconutrients from your food. However, it's doubtful that this will happen in a junk food society.

The most readily available source of micronutrients comes from the Mannatech company. I am a consumer of Mannatech products.
