The foods we eat can be broadly classified into three groups.

1. |
WATER
This includes all liquids that are
predominantly water-based. |

MACRO NUTRIENTS
There are three key macronutrients
n
fat
n
protein
n
Carbohydrate
• very low density; <100 Kj/100gms
•
very low density; <100 Kj/100gms
•
low density; between 100 and 300
•
low density; between 100 and 300
•
medium density; 300 - 1000Kj/100gms
•
high density; 1000 - 1500kj/100gms
- bread - which is
flour with air in between it.
•
very high density over
1500kj/100gms - garbohydrates,
particularly flour which has
(circa) 1500Kj/100gms and sugar (1700Kj/100gms. Into this
category is situated biscuits - 1700 - 2400 Kj/100gms - high
density junk food.
It's important to get the right mix of the
three macro-nutrients. e.g. you need between 20% - 30% of your energy
from fat. If you try to exist on a 97% fat free diet you could end up
becoming depressed and arthritic. You could also suffer from the body
system dysfunctions that occur when you don't get enough of the fat
soluble vitamins.
You need 20% - 30% of your energy from
protein.
You need to steer clear of the
garbohydrates, particularly if your a person who put on fat easily or
gets headaches, arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes.

It's worth looking at the
Zone Diet
by Barry Sears to
get a picture of what he believes are the right proportions to maintain
good health. Other writers and nutritionists have, of course differing
opinions. Each of us has to decide for ourselves which camp we're going
to exist in. |

Caloric composition of a zone compatible diet |
The best way to do this is to stand in the
buff in front of a full length mirror. If you're in perfect health,
trim, taut and terrific you must be doing something right. If you're
fat, depressed and tired, it's time to start eating differently. Sears
is a good place to start, but you can also take a look at the

MICRO NUTRIENTS - nutraceuticals
a. Essential nutrients
Within this classification there are the
essential nutrients - ones which the body can't make itself from fat,
protein and carbohydrate and which are necessary for normal healthy cell
function
b. Herbs and spices
There is another range of nutraceuticals
which, whilst they are not essential, nevertheless boost the octane
rating of the food generally, and act to enhance cell function. Known
since antiquity that have act to improve cell function in normal healthy
people and assist in the repair of cells when people are ill.
You may be familiar with such names as
ginkgo biloba, Echinacea, coenzyme Q10, glucosamine, spiralina, ginseng
... You can also put into this class things like garlic, ginger and the
herbs with a specific focus, like St John's Wort (to enhance mood) and
saw palmetto to free up the male waterworks.

GLYCONUTRIENTS

Glyconutrients are comprised of 8
essential plant sugars. In the usual course of events we are likely
to receive a satisfactory intake of only 2 of them, glucose and
galactose.
Until the mid 1990's carbohydrates
were believed to only provide energy. It's since been found that
they have a major role to play in intercellular communication.
If the communication is compromised, the chance of dysfunction
of some kind is enhanced.
The term "Glycobiology"
(the study of Glyconutrients) was only coined in 1991. Since
then a wealth of information has been unearthed and is
revolutionising healthcare and the treatment of disease.
It is a new and emerging area of nutritional science.
The glycoproteins are
immune system modulators,
i.e. if the immune system becomes over-stimulated (as in lupus)
the glycoprotein has a modulating influence and assists in
calming down an over-active immune system. If the immune system
becomes under stimulate - colds, flu, cancer, then the process
works in reverse, then the glycoproteins.
The list of effects that
glycoproteins have on the body includes: -
-
fighting auto-immune diseases
-
strengthening the immune
system
-
lowering cholesterol
-
normalizing blood sugar
-
burning excess fat
-
relieving allergies
-
strengthening bones
-
accelerating wound healing
-
providing more energy
-
improving athletic performance
- for regular folks and athletes.
There are a range of conditions as
long as your arm which have been found to improve when people
include glycoproteins in their diet: -
-
arthritis
-
psoriasis
-
diabetes
-
ADHS
-
chronic fatigue
-
colds and flu
